Cross–Shelf Exchange Along the Antarctic Continental Margin: Modeling Results
The shelf areas around the Antarctic Continent are locations of dense water formation; part of these water masses ventilate the adjacent deep ocean basins and enter the global thermohaline circulation. This paper takes a look at regional differences of shelf sea–deep ocean exchange in high southern latitudes (mainly between the Weddell and Ross Seas), highlights a few physical mechanisms potent...
متن کاملElephant teeth from the atlantic continental shelf.
Teeth of mastodons and mammoths have been recovered by fishermen from at least 40 sites on the continental shelf as deep as 120 meters. Also present are submerged shorelines, peat deposits, lagoonal shells, anz relict sands. Evidently elephants and other large mammals ranged this region during the glacial stage of low sea level of the last 25,000 years.
متن کاملAnalysis of the circulation and shelf-slope exchanges in the continental margin of the northwestern Mediterranean
In this paper, we present the results from a high horizontal resolution numerical simulation of the northwestern Mediterranean using a z-level, non-hydrostatic, primitive equation ocean model (DieCAST). The high resolution allows an accurate representation of the submarine canyons that presides in the region. The model is one-way coupled to a large scale model of the Mediterranean Sea through o...
متن کاملLoss of health certificates among offshore petroleum workers on the Norwegian Continental Shelf 2002-2010.
BACKGROUND A health certificate is required to work on the offshore petroleum installations of the Norwegian Shelf. Loss of health certificate (loss of licence, LOL) may cause economic problems for the individual worker. A private compensation system (OSO) was established for Norwegian offshore workers in 2002, comprising 8000-11,000 individual members of workers organisations: approximately on...
متن کاملReconnaissance Survey of the Irish Continental Shelf/Shelf Edge Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS) 1996 A GLORIA Survey of the Irish Continental Margin
The Atlantic Irish Regional Survey (AIRS96) sidescan sonar survey was carried out in August 1996. Covering an area of 200,000 km 2 it represented the largest reconnaissance seabed survey of the Irish Continental Shelf region. It covered both margins, together with much of the basin floor, of the Irish sector of the Rockall Trough and extended into the northern part of the Porcupine Seabight. Th...
